Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the convenience channel was subdued over the last 12 months with the exception of a handful of blockbuster deals like Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey’s General Stores Inc.’s acquisition of Temple, Texas-based Fikes Wholesale and its CEFCO Convenience Stores chain for $1.145 billion, and Brentwood, Tenn.-based Delek US Holdings’ divestment of all of its retail assets to a Mexican-based subsidiary of FEMSA, parent of the OXXO chain.
Consequently, the U.S. c-store universe does not deviate much from what it was, as evidenced by this year’s Convenience Store News Top 100 ranking, which was prepared in association with Nielsen TDLinx based on March 2025 figures. Once again, as was the case with this year’s list, spots one through three are Irving, Texas-based 7-Eleven Inc. at 12,369 outlets, Laval, Quebec-based Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. (ACT) at 5,851 locations, and Casey’s at 2,899 outlets. All these three companies share a total of 21,119 out of the industry’s 152,192 stores or 13.87%.
Finishing out the top 10 are EG America of Westborough, Mass. (1,406), GPM Investments LLC of Richmond, Va. (1,334), Murphy USA Inc. of El Dorado, Ark. (1,173), QuikTrip Corp. of Tulsa, Okla. (1,142), Wawa Inc. of Media, Pa. (1,117), Kwik Trip Inc. of La Crosse, Wis. (879), and Maverik Inc. of Salt Lake City (852). The top 10 collectively account for a total of 29,022 locations or 19.06% of the industry total.
